I am applying to do a Master of Information Systems (MIS) at the University of Melbourne because of my strong motive for undertaking further study in this field from both empirical and academic aspects. I would like to undertake the Information Systems' course as this is a logical continuation of my studies to date and my work experience, combined with my consistent curiosity in how the information systems are used in business today. In addition, I am keen to study in Australia, especially at the University of Melbourne. As a postgraduate student, I hope to extend my study based on one interest which has been acquired in my undergraduate study and work experience. That is, my aim is to comprehend information systems from various perspectives (e.g technological, industrial and economic) and how these elements relate to each other when discussing information systems.
One factor that has encouraged me to learn more is my observations through my international travel. Over the years, I have visited several countries to see many kinds of lifestyles and cultural forms, and to communicate with local people in order to appreciate their values. I have stayed in developed countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States as well as travelling in developing countries such as China. Through these experiences I learned that there was an enormous gap in the information technology infrastructure and people's lives between advanced countries and emerging ones, which motivated me to have a strong desire to acquire further knowledge about, and think more deeply on, information systems. My travel experience also developed my communication and negotiation skills that will be valuable living and studying in Australia.
Academically, my undergraduate studies at University encouraged me to become interested in analysis. My major is Social Science, especially Econometrics, concentrating on the declining birthrate in Japan. Thus, as an undergraduate, I have studied various population problems from a wide perspective while studying techniques for collecting, organizing, assessing and understanding the implications of large amounts of information. This experience in data collection and analysis will be a fundamental skill for studying in Australia and will be something I will be able to apply directly to my research.
After graduating, I worked for three years as a data analyst for Kei Japan, one of the most popular retail stores in Japan. I predicted market trends and analyzed changing sales techniques allowing the company to make important decisions about projects, which motivated me to have a strong desire to acquire further knowledge about, and think more deeply on, information systems. This experience also gave me more advanced data analysis techniques and practical application, which again will be crucial to my success on the MIS course.
I am extremely keen to study Information Systems, the programme at the University of Melbourne will be hugely helpful for gaining further understanding of how Information Systems are used within business today. At your university, I am particularly eager to study your elective subjects such as Business Analysis and Decision Making and Knowledge Management Systems because these programmes help me to improve business and IT problem solving skills, therefore, those special programmes will support my future. As well as my academic studies, I am also looking forward to immersing myself in the international environment provided at the University of Melbourne as I will be able to broaden my view.
Another reason I have chosen to study overseas is that although satisfying my academic curiosity in my own country may be possible, studying abroad is highly recommended for fulfilling my future goals. This is because, in my opinion, exchanging ideas and opinions actively with students who have diverse backgrounds is necessary for gaining a deeper understanding of Information Systems in the world today.
My long-term goal is to make a significant contribution to educating young people by equipping them with knowledge on what is actually happening around the world. In order to achieve this goal, obtaining a wide range of viewpoints by studying and gaining experience in your academic community will be indispensable for me.
My strong motivation means that I will do my utmost to play an active part in, and try to make an important contribution to, the Master’s programme at the University of Melbourne. I truly hope to be given the opportunity to study within the Master of Information Systems at the University of Melbourne.
